That said, the actual wiki isn't particularly amazing at explaining the history of the world itself, so here goes. Note, one very important detail to point out, that isn't very well explained in the game itself, is that Code Vein takes place in the same universe that the series God Eater does. Some of the background information about why this world exists as it does is loaned from the lore behind that series as well.
An apocalyptic event, known as The Great Collapse, began around the year 2050. Human civilization began expanding its technological prowess, growing by leaps and bounds in short bursts of time. Researchers had uncovered a new type of single-celled organism, referred to as "The Oracle Cell." Abundant with sentience, it has the ability to self replicate and colonize at extremely fast growth rates. At the same time, scientists in the city of Vein are uncovering a similar discovery known as the "BOR (Biological Organ Regenerative) Parasite." It has the ability to latch onto organic tissue and use its own internal ecosystem to revive its host, replacing its own blood into the human and changing them. The parasite can work on human corpses that have recently died, which sets into motion the creation of Revenants, vampiric humans who have had the BOR parasite implanted into their heart. The two most famed scientists who explore this option are Karen and Aurora- the former of which is Louis's sister.
They discover that a certain percentage of the population can coexist with the BOR parasites, but when used on people with low compatibility, it twists them into monstrous undead, eventually consuming the organic tissue the human once had and removing their autonomy completely. The BOR parasite feeds on one substance alone- blood, and those who can't maintain their own individuality against the parasite, or those who can't feed themselves with enough blood to sustain the parasite within them, become bloodthirsted and begin to frenzy. The parasite takes over the host via the central nervous system and ravenously goes after blood in order to maintain its life within the host. Humans who exert control over the parasite become known as Revenants, and those who fall victim to bloodthirst and frenzy are known as The Lost. In short, gaining the regenerative capabilities of the BOR parasite also means accepting bloodthirst.
Due to the fact that BOR parasite research causes such a dangerous transformation to the test subject, ethical quandaries are raised and advancement in the field stagnates-- until the events of the Great Collapse. As BOR parasite studies come to a halt, research elsewhere on the Oracle Cell continues to flourish. Eventually, through genetic mutation, the Oracle cell begins to cluster, absorbing all the cells around it and growing into multi-cellular organisms with a single hive mind. The proliferation and mitotic creation of Oracle cells explodes, consuming and integrating everything in its path. Monstrous creatures are born, called "the horrors" in Code Vein, and "the Aragami" in God Eater. They begin their assault on the world, initiating the events of the Great Collapse. Large colonies of the Oracle Cell begin to conglomerate and scorching the earth, raising large maws into the ground that make the world appear as if it's being consumed by the Oracle Cells. These are referred to ubiquitously throughout both series as the "Thorns of Judgment."
This propels the research of BOR parasites back into the spotlight, as Karen and Aurora are brought into the fold to discuss the implication of creating superhumans to stave off the horrors that continue to encroach upon civilization. By this point, over half the world's population of humans have been decimated, providing an ample amount of people to attempt regeneration through BOR parasite research. The first generation of Revenants are created, and for a time, they keep the horrors at bay and protect Vein from the onslaught of their rage. Bloodthirst, however, remains an issue and Karen begins researching a way to eliminate the problem and prevent Revenants from frenzying. They begin a thorough attempt to solve for this issue by initiating Project QUEEN, the events of which begin the trajectory towards the start of Code Vein.
Aurora and Karen begin experimenting on a single BOR parasite, feeding into it the genetic material behind every known blood type, aiming to create a parasite with a database that remains sated. Meanwhile, they begin to search for a host that has a high enough compatibility with BOR parasites to keep it under check. This comes in the form of Cruz Silva, the daughter of a high ranking soldier, Gregorio Silva, and childhood friend to- you guessed it, Louis Amamiya. Cruz, wanting to save humanity, willingly allows herself to be implanted with the super-parasite. She's experimented on continuously, as the powerful BOR parasite inside her continues to grow in power, granting her amazing, and terrifying, gifts that seem close to magic. Louis visits her regularly, with special permission from his sister Karen, and watches as she begins to struggle with the primal instincts of the menace being grown inside her.
It proves too much to bear for her, and as she begins to realize that she's harboring a monster inside her, she begs Louis to end her life before she loses herself. Louis, however, can't find the courage to do it, and eventually she frenzies and destroys the laboratory facility in which she's been guarded in. Her ravenous thirst for blood cannot be sated, as she ascends to her new identity, the Queen. Louis arrives to the scene, but is struck down and killed by her. His sister shares the same fate.
A second wave of Revenants is created in order to put her down. BOR parasite research from their findings on Queen prove immensely successful as they're able to engineer a parasite that grants Revenants similar gifts that the Queen possessed. Unable to deal with their deaths, Aurora implants the BOR parasite into the Amamiya siblings. Project Queenslayer kicks off as a last ditch effort to destroy the threat they created. As a confrontation kicks off with Gregorio Silva as the leader of the provisional government, Louis is unconscious and recovering from the implantation procedure. He's asleep for the entirety of the mission, and never sees what happens to his childhood friend, as she's struck down and killed. Louis awakens from death and begins life anew, remembering only small bits of his sister and Cruz, and nothing else.
PERSONALITY:
Despite losing the majority of his memories and waking up as a Revenant, Louis maintains who he is at the core of his being, enduring through the hardships of the world around him and carrying onto the guilt of losing his best friend. Anyone who's met him knows how intensely focused he is, refusing to stray away from the goals he sets before himself, as he vies against the world like sandpaper, grating it down inch by inch until his dream can one day be realized: to end the suffering of humans and Revenants alike. But it hasn't been easy for him, as he carries a weight on his shoulders that he refuses to let others bear with him. Despite the world becoming a dog eat dog society, he maintains a level-headedness about himself that shines through with his ideological personality, compassionate moral compass, burning desire to understand, and extremely driven nature. But he wasn't always as courageous as he is now- behind everything, he's a guarded, guilt ridden person who has trouble getting close to people, afraid that he'll lose them... or worse, have to live through the events of Project QUEEN again.
In order to understand anything about Louis, we have to start at the formative event in his life that changed him forever. As his world was being broken down by external forces known as "the Horrors," the city of Vein looked towards creating human soldiers that could withstand battle with monsters who threatened the structure of society as we know it. Project QUEEN was kicked off in an attempt to manipulate BOR parasites and strengthen them, while reducing the conditions of bloodthirst in the host's body that was injected with them. Someone who had to have an immensely high compatibility rate needed to step forward and accept the risk of the project. This happened to be Cruz Silva, a close friend of Louis' that had attended university with him before the Great Collapse. Louis was lucky, in a way, that his sister was a lead scientist assigned to the project, and as a means to make Cruz's life better as she underwent the implantation process, allowed Louis to visit her regularly.
We see Louis faithfully coming to the research facility to spend time with her. In spending time with her, he shows his compassion and love for others who are going through unbearably difficult times. They spend time together as she progressively gets worse and worse, and the tests get more painful to endure. Louis is there through all of it, trying to be the best friend he can to her, despite watching her go through it. We see him in an almost puppy love state, joking with Cruz (which is the only indication in the entire game that he has a sense of humor whatsoever). But he's also so naive at this point- he believes that the project will work, that his sister is this paragon of hope, and his belief in Cruz becomes so strong, that he blinds himself to reality of the situation and the warning signs that are written all over the wall in what she confides in him. He should have known better, and this sets up a guilt inside him that never goes away.
She begs him, days before her frenzy and monstrous ascension, to kill her. This deeply tears into Louis, confronting him with making a decision no one should ever have to make. He questions himself, knowing that she's right, and it breaks him apart. How can he go through with killing someone he's grown so intensely close with? The thought torments him, and he eventually chooses the coward's route. He can't slay her, no matter how much evident it is that she's in pain and on the verge of collapsing into frenzy. That indecision haunts Louis, and it sets the stage for almost every awful thing that happens in the wake of Queen's rampage. As the sole person who could've ended it earlier, Louis is wracked with the knowledge and guilt attached to it- so deep that it's one of the few memories he actually keeps (albeit imperfect and fuzzy) when he awakens. Louis subsequently dies at the hand of Cruz when he returns to the research facility one last fateful time. The parasite has taken control of her body and subdued her will, but she's still in there, somewhere... watching as she kills one of her only friends in the world.
Because he didn't have the courage to do what was the right thing to do and his inaction caused the suffering of so many more humans and Revenants, it deeply shapes who he is throughout the game. It's a sin that's charred into his existence, one that he feels he can never truly redeem himself of. This sort of mentality extends itself to his new life, post death. His outlook on life hardens as he begins to bear a grudge against the unfair sorrow that plagues the world around him. Through this, his efforts become focused on making a world where Revenants and humans can coexist together in peace.
His ideologies are tested constantly by external factors. Not quite siding completely with humans and not entirely in the camp of Revenants who are beginning to band together to overthrow the provisional government set up to keep them safe, he finds himself tested time and time again. He wants to tread a third path that hasn't been charted out yet, a means to find a middle ground between the two. Again, he feels the immense guilt of Vein in the state that it's in. Louis didn't inject the BOR parasite into Cruz, but he still feels culpable for the events that followed and can't let go of them. The heaviness of his inaction makes him extremely brazen in conflicts during the course of the game. When a human is being hunted down by rogue Revenants who are verging closer and closer to frenzying, he sets out with his friends to track her down and keep her safe from them. He throws a bag of blood beads to the hunter Revenant and tells him to get lost, citing that if he ever sees him again, he'll kill him. He mutters out to the main protagonist in disdain and contempt, "I swear I'll end it. The Revenants' suffering must end."
Meanwhile, the human runs off and hides, only to later appear in a panic state. She cries out when she's finally discovered by Louis, taking a knife to her own throat and threatening to end her life. Louis deescalates the situation... letting her know that he has a contact that can get her into a government facility where she doesn't have to live on the street and be drained by Revenants day in and day out. She almost doesn't believe him, until he confides in her: "You're the one who decides how you live. I think the time for sacrifices is over, that's all." He shows how true to his beliefs he sticks, regardless of how hard those decisions might be. In giving that Revenant blood beads, he's chided by his teammates that they'll have to ration until they can recover more. He sticks to his guns, though, and in the end, it shows that he's uncompromising in his hatred for the way the world currently is.
Louis shows time and time again how compassionate he is towards the plights that the Revenants face, while maintaining a fierce protectiveness over the well-being of humans around him. This dual nature is not a common thing in the world, but also echoes back to his final days as a human. In the same regard, he distances himself from others in a way that he believes absolves them from the guilt he harbors. For example, he meets a fellow Revenant named Kevin, who's out there in the world and starving. Louis provides him with some blood beads in order to stop him from frenzying, which is an act of generosity so beyond the comprehension of the boy that he can't understand Louis' actions. As luck would have it, Kevin survives and begins taking on odd jobs- scouting and hunting bloodsprings. He looks up to Louis, who has since left him behind out of fear that attachment to others would lead to their downfall. Kevin idolizes him, trying to become more like him and eventually meets his end when a gang of Revenants discover that he's been collecting blood beads and helping others who are close to frenzy. It's another failure in Louis' life to tack onto, which he blames himself for.
It isn't until the game reveals Kevin's last memories that offer a small beacon of redemption. In death, Kevin recalls the goodness inside Louis and the trouble that he's caused for everyone else. His last wish is for him to be more like Louis, if only so that he could bring hope to those around him and aspire to helping others the way that he was helped. Louis finds some peace with this, finding some redemption in his act, even if he thought he was being naive in offering Kevin additional supplies to live off of in the first place. It's because of his compassion for others that propels him forward in his wish to uncover why the world is the way it is and end the unceasing cycle of suffering.
A lot of what Louis does throughout the canon of Code Vein is to quench a thirst for knowledge. He had looked up to his sister, Karen, for the advancements that she had made in BOR parasite research when they were both human, and as a university student, he was set towards his own path of following in her footsteps. It's this inquisitive, and somewhat untrusting of the obvious nature that nurtures him into uncovering the root cause behind the world's bloodsprings beginning to dry up. Although distant at first, he accepts the help of others in his quest to search for the source of the blood beads and how they're manufactured. He thinks that if he can find out where it comes from, then maybe they can do something to end the starvation that's transforming so many Revenants into the Lost. His quick thinking and analytic mind are crucial to following the ley lines under the city to uncover a reality that nobody knows about: the Queen can't ever truly die. Despite the fact that Cruz was defeated in battle and stabbed through the heart, she maintains an infinite regenerative power. The only way to keep her from resuscitating, then, is to divide her body up into a number of pieces called relics and store them in the bodies of other Revenants, as they become known as Successors. It's a fail-safe so that the world never has to deal with a frenzied Queen or the destruction she wrought upon it.
Because Louis is entrenched with uncovering the source for the famine of blood beads over the last year or so, he stumbles upon this knowledge and immediately knows that he has to take action on it. As it turns out, each Revenant who had a relic implanted into their body is suffering the same twisted pain that his friend Cruz had went through during her initial transformation. And he can't stand by as that happens. He can't let the same thing happen again- a feeling that's invigorated tenfold when he discovers that his sister, Karen, is one of those Successors. She lays in an eternal slumber beneath a cathedral, praying for redemption as giant trees with thorns protrude from her body. He finds out that she's the source of the blood beads, the one thing that's kept this society from collapsing into bloodthirst. It strikes him deeply, and having to contend with the failures of his past, he moves forward, invigorated towards stopping the pain everyone suffers continuously.
Lastly, we see that Louis has an extremely strong willpower to get things done. It manifests itself in sometimes difficult to understand ways- especially regarding how close he gets to other people or how much he lets them in. At one point, while the rest of his crew are enjoying celebration, he stands off to the side and watches, unable to participate as they all seem to be getting closer. At this point, Coco, a Revenant who lives at his home base and is a merchant by trade, teases him lightly. She remarks that he usually has eyes "like a dead fish," implying that his serious nature and his own personal demons continually torment him and make him look closer and closer to being less truly alive. But at this particular moment, when he's surrounded by people he's beginning to trust, she notes that he looks different, more lively and in good spirit.
This catches Louis off guard a bit, but she's right. He's so focused and driven, and probably self-loathing that he doesn't even notice how deeply those around him care for him. It's more than just sharing an objective or a vision together, they're his team, and it takes him a long time to become comfortable with that again. In fact, almost every time a new party member joins, he frames it as some sort of a deal that provides an exchange of service. He shakes hands with them, treats it as a business transaction and conducts missions with them... that inevitably bring them closer anyway. He can't quite completely shed himself of emotion, and as he learns to be less hard on himself, his friends are there along the way to remind him.
Throughout the game of Code Vein, we're introduced to a young man that's wracked with guilt for not taking action when he needed to. He vows to never make that mistake again, as he comes face to face with reminders of his regret every day. Using that as a motivating factor, he emboldens himself to uncover why the world is losing its ability to create a vital source of food for Revenants, but maintains who he is and what he believes in all throughout the story. His passion to make the world a better place and put an end to all the sacrifices people are sadly forced to make encourages a tight knit group of companions that share his hopes and dreams to continue fighting on. As he struggles to become closer to them and not let his own problems haunt them, he finds camaraderie and comfort in their presence. A deeply flawed person who just wants to believe in peace during an age of rampant war, Louis Amamiya holds tight to his ideals and shows true understanding of the problems those around him face.
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
○ Revenant: a human who died whose heart was preserved by BOR parasites that now intertwine with the host at a molecular level. When it's fused and integrated, the human body can die over and over again (losing memories each time it happens) by turning into particle mist and resurrecting. The only way to destroy a regular revenant is to destroy its heart, which will turn their body to ash and make them incapable of reviving. To sustain the parasite inside the body, it requires blood as nourishment. Certain environmental stresses such as miasma increases the bloodthirst of a revenant, forcing them to consume more before they begin to frenzy. A revenant who has lost control of their bloodlust is at risk to frenzy, losing all sense of their humanity as the parasite takes over the central nervous system and twists the host into a monster, known as a Lost. This condition is irrecoverable.
○ Ichor: The ability of his blood to use and sustain gifts from his blood code (see below). A limited resource that's empowered by consuming blood- either through a drain attack or consuming it.
○ Blood draining: he has fangs that protract outward, allowing him to drink blood from humans if necessary.
○ Drain Attack: The ability of his body to, while fighting, drain blood from his enemy to use as a weapon. This ability is performed by the Blood Veil, an armor revenants are capable of using that symbiotically works with them. Blood veils are explained in the inventory section below.
○ Blood code "Prometheus": the design of Louis' blood code (genetic structure) grants him specific gifts. A blood code is powered up by the acquisition of memories that were once lost by the blood code user. Because of that, he's able to perform the following abilities:
-Phantom Assault: Vanish like mist, then do a jump slash. An offensive skill performed with One-Handed sword/Halberd/Bayonet
-Fire Storm: Shoots a series of flaming projectiles that stagger the enemy.
-Blade Dance: Temporarily increases attack power each time he damages an enemy with his weapon.
-Flame Weapon: Temporarily adds fire damage to his and his partner's current weapons.
-Savvy Evasion: Increases his ability to focus in battle the more he dodges attacks.
-Warding Mark: Temporarily makes his weapons more prone to staggering an enemy.
-Hasten: Uses internal ichor to boost reflexes for a short time
-One-handed Sword Mastery: A passive trait that increases his ability to wield one-handed swords.
-Eternal Blade Dance: Temporarily increases attack power each time he successfully dodges an attack.
INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
○ Purifier mask: as Lost are vanquished, they emit a particle into the air known as miasma. A revenant who inhales miasma increases their bloodthirst exponentially, creating a cycle of unfortunate suffering. Purifier masks were created by mounting a headgear onto a revenant that allows their own blood to be drained from them at a barely noticeable rate. A gas mask is placed over the headgear, with purification qualities intended to use the revenant's blood to cycle through the air and neutralize it, keeping the miasma away from affecting them.
○ Blood Veil "Ogre": Blood veils are a type of armor, specially developed equipment with the goal of staving off frenzying on the battlefield. They're particularly good at efficiently draining and purifying the blood of an enemy during combat, replacing the need to drain using their fangs. When activated, the material of the armor merges with the organic matter of a revenant. Louis' particular blood veil, Ogre, grants him a claw for close range draining.
○ Serum: a medicinal substance that, when poured on certain plant life, allows it to become proficient at neutralizing miasma around it. While draining toxins from the air, it produces blood beads, a blooming tear of blood that can be used as a substitute instead of drinking human blood. Created during the research done on Project QUEEN. Louis probably has 1-2 vials of it, at most.
○ Enduring Crimson: Louis' sword.
○ Karen's ring: He carries her ring around his neck at all times, a small memento to remind him of who she is.
FACTION CHOICE: Moon Temple
REASON: Louis weighs his actions very heavily against his circumstances. He holds regret in his heart over much of the events that occurred directly because of, or indirectly due to, his inaction. As such, he's very guarded when it comes to decision making, and thinks extremely heavily on what the most consistently logical path of action should be. He breaks down large problems into smaller ones and investigates, analyzes and researches before taking action. Because of this, his natural affinity lies towards the ideals of the Moon faction and he would most likely fit in well there.
TATTOO: Waxing gibbous - a symbol often associated with healing and empathy to the suffering of others- located on the forearm, right before the elbow. Since blood moons aren't on the color spectrum, a purple with some deep reds in the hues, like mulberry would be neat!
SUITABILITY: As long as he's convinced what he's doing will benefit the world, and truly believes in it, then he's pretty much set in stone to work towards that goal without abating. At his current canon point post-game, they've figured out a way to keep the protective barrier around Vein still up, with the threat of Queen's revival reduced to an impossibility. He sets off with his team to explore outside the Gaol of the Mists. With his world already in a post-apocalyptic state, he'd willingly come to Fellden if it meant coming back with new insights or tools to deal with the Aragami outside the walls of the city. The origins of the BOR parasites, the way the Thorns of Judgment work, or any notion that Fellden might have an answer to why his world was fated to go through the Great Collapse is highly up there in motivating factors. And while the answers might not be here, he's ultimately meant to be a super soldier that protects the world from calamitous upheaval.

NOTES, QUESTIONS, COMMENTS: Thanks for the app review! I apologize for how weird this canon is, since it tends to throw out new terms left and right and creates a very confusing world in general to draw from. If there's anything I can do to help or clarify, please let me know.
Other than that, I read through the notes on vampires on the FAQ that were already brought up. He's vampire adjacent, technically- needing to sustain himself off of blood beads or human blood in order to survive, but there's no aversion to sunlight or most of the vampire tropes that exist.
For curiosity's sake, would it make sense (if the serum item is approved from the app), that he successfully managed to recreate a bloodspring by applying the serum to a tree somewhere in the temple? I definitely didn't want to make assumptions about the setting beyond "each faction leader will be well aware of each need of their faction members and will ensure it is met accordingly with whatever needs they may have." Other than that, I'm all for playing out reluctant human draining with ooc consent if it comes down to it in extenuating circumstances.
Last question, too - I swear!!! It looks like death has a pretty big impact on the PCs in the game, but it's pretty meaningless in Code Vein aside from amnesia. Most revenants die over and over again, losing a little more of themselves each time. If Louis manages to get himself ding dong dead during a quest or mission, does he return to particle mist and resurrect, or would he have to be revived at the temple?
Also, god please nerf him.
